Pilot episode of Supergirl is revealed.
After rather lengthy (more than 6 minutes) first look of Supergirl, the pilot episode is out
there. Helmed by Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti who are also one of the co-creators
and producers of Arrow and The Flash and Ali Adler, Supergirl appears to be ready to fly.
Supergirl will be on CBS this fall, so itis still unknown that it will be connected to the Arrow
or the Flash even with the same producers as the networks should agree to do so, which is a
long shot at the least. But a possibility nonetheless. On the other hand, Arrow and the Flash
seems they will continue to expand their universe with the DC's Legends of Tomorrow. But
that is a discussion for another day.
Enough with the introduction, coming back to Supergirl; after watching the extended first
look, the Pilot episode was and extended version of this extended first look, nothing more.
This statement may be a little harsh, but this is what I felt. Most of the episode I was like "Oh,
come on!". I don't want to spoil anything but 'a thank you would be nice!', you'll understand
what I mean when you watch it. The writing and dialogues were felt little off. At least to me,
they were.
The creators of Arrow and the Flash are known for their nods to their predecessors, Barry's
father being the original Flash from 90s show, and Trickster Mark Hamill along with one of
my favorite scenes: "Is it a bird, is it a plane? It's my boyfriend" reference to Brandon Rooth's
the Atom (who was Superman in Superman Returns (2006)) are the examples that come to my
head. They continue their habit with placing Dean Cain (Superman/Clark Kent from Lois and
Clark: The New Adventures of Superman from 90s) and Helen Slater (original Supergirl from
1984 movie Supergirl) as Kara's adoptive earth parents the Danvers. It was a moment that "I
know that guy from somewhere), which was nice.
The most important part for the episode was its music. It was well toned and placed, and very
well be the most uplifting part of this episode. I am well aware this is only a the pilot (as the
name implies, the episode determines if the show will be lifted), but showing so much was
really necessary. It was like the pilot/first episode of Almost Human which also showed too
much. Another upside was Calista Flockhart who we know and love from Ally McBeal and
who plays Cat Grant, the owner of CatCo Media. Opposite to the Daily Planet's Perry White
of she appears to be more like a J.J Jamison type.
Another and final remark may be, it is nice to see that they can mention Superman rather than
keeping him completely out of the story. But I am certain that this name mentioning will be
the most they will do. A link between TV and cinema as Marvel and ABC collaboration will
very unlikely in DC universe as it is rumored that Barry Allen will be different in the
cinematic version.
As a final note; I hope the show turn out to be good, but I have my doubts.
